چکیده

Cannabis is a widely used drug of abuse in the United States (US) with over 16.7 million users reported in 2009 [1]. Known for its psychedelic effects, it is mostly commonly abused by young individuals. Cannabis is also utilized by the medical field for a number of medicinal purposes, some of which have been well known for centuries. Most recently, the role of Cannabis as a medicinal agent has led to debates within several states about its legalization for non-medicinal or recreational use [2]. As of January 2014, Colorado became the first state to legalize cannabis for recreational use. Chronic cannabis users who are exposed to its active chemical ingredient, Δ9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), develop addiction at an early age. Many quit its use, but those who continue its use can sometimes develop certain unusual illnesses. One such condition known to us is the “Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome” (CHS), first described in 2004 by Allen and colleagues [3].

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome: a case report and review of pathophysiology.

Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug in the United States, with lifetime prevalence of use estimated at 42% to 46%. The antiemetic properties of cannabis are well-known by the medical community and the general public; however, less well-recognized is the paradoxical potential for certain chronic users to develop hyperemesis. We describe in this case a patient with prior extensive work-...

Successful Treatment of Suspected Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome Using Haloperidol in the Outpatient Setting

Chronic use of cannabis can result in a syndrome of hyperemesis characterized by cyclical vomiting without any other identifiable causes. Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is seldom responsive to traditional antiemetic therapies. Despite frequent nausea and vomiting, patients may be reluctant to discontinue use of cannabis. We report a case of severe, refractory CHS with complete resolutio...

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.

Legalization of marijuana use will increase the number of people who will become long-term users. A prior medical record review study in Australia, in 2004, identified 19 chronic marijuana users who entered the emergency department with recurrent vomiting associated with abdominal pain. Routine treatment of the nausea and vomiting, associated with the chronic marijuana abuse, with antiemetics i...

Successful Treatment of Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome with Topical Capsaicin

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is a clinical entity in which marijuana users develop nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain that improves with hot water bathing or cannabis cessation. Previous models suggest that CHS arises solely from the derangement of cannabinoid receptor type 1 signaling. However, involvement of transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1 (TRPV1) receptor, which ...
